How Often Should You Clean Curtains? Dry Cleaning vs Washing at Home

By the Dhulai team · 16 Oct 2026

Curtains are some of the largest fabric surfaces in a home, and they quietly collect dust, pollution, pollen, kitchen smoke and pet hair. In Gurugram, where dust and winter smog are part of life, they get dirty faster than most people think. Here is how often to clean them, which ones you can wash at home and which ones need professional dry cleaning.

How often should you clean curtains?

TaskHow often
Shake out or vacuum with a brush attachmentEvery 2 to 3 weeks
Deep clean living room and bedroom curtainsEvery 6 months
Deep clean kitchen curtainsEvery 3 months
Extra cleanBefore Diwali, after renovation work and after the winter smog season

If anyone at home has dust allergies or asthma, clean curtains more often. They hold on to the dust that sets off sneezing and coughing.

Signs your curtains need cleaning now

  • Dust comes off when you draw them, or you can see a grey line along the folds.
  • The room smells stale even after airing, especially near the windows.
  • The bottom edge looks darker than the rest of the curtain.
  • Kitchen curtains feel sticky to touch.
  • Someone at home sneezes more in that room than in others.

Curtains you can usually wash at home

Light, unlined cotton or polyester curtains and simple sheers can often go in a washing machine on a gentle, cold cycle. Check the care label first. Hang them to dry and put them back up while very slightly damp so the creases drop out with their own weight.

Curtains that need dry cleaning

  • Lined curtains. The lining and the main fabric often shrink differently, leaving puckered, uneven edges.
  • Blackout curtains. The coating can crack or peel in a washing machine.
  • Velvet, silk, linen and embroidered curtains. These lose their texture, sheen or shape in water.
  • Pleated curtains and curtains with heading tape. Washing can distort the pleats.
  • Long or heavy curtains. They overload home machines and are very hard to dry properly.

The real cost of washing the wrong curtains at home

The most common problem is shrinkage. A pair of curtains that comes out of the machine at two slightly different lengths cannot be fixed. Fading, a stiff or crackled blackout layer and a strained washing machine are close behind. For lined, heavy or expensive curtains, professional cleaning costs far less than replacing them.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does curtain dry cleaning cost in Gurugram?

At Dhulai, rates are per panel of 42-inch width: window curtains under 5 ft ₹139, window curtains over 5 ft ₹189, door curtains ₹169 (₹239 with lining) and heavy or blackout curtains ₹329.

Do you take the curtains down and hang them back?

Yes. Dhulai takes your curtains down at home, dry cleans and steam presses them, then brings them back and hangs them up again.

Can blackout curtains be washed in a washing machine?

It is not recommended. The blackout coating can crack or peel in a machine, and the curtain can shrink unevenly. Blackout curtains are best dry cleaned.
